What Makes GCS® Unique (Explaining Technology)

Advanced Soil Composite Behavior

Unlike conventional reinforced soil systems, GCS® walls act as a unified structural composite — or GeoMonolith — where soil confinement plays a central role in performance. This composite behavior cannot be predicted by simply evaluating each material component separately.

Close Spacing for Superior Confinement

The key to GCS® performance lies in tightly spaced geosynthetic layers within compacted soil. These inclusions confine individual soil particles, preventing dilation and resulting in strength and stability far beyond systems with widely spaced reinforcement.

Robert K. Barrett

Bob was a founder and was Director of Innovation for GeoStabilization International. He was Chairman of NCHRP Project 12-59, charged with preparing Design and Construction Guidelines For Bridge Abutments on Geosynthetically Reinforced Soil.

ast Chair of the TRB Committee on Geosynthetics, and the NCHRP project that developed proper closure methods for geotechnical borings. Recipient of 1991 Colorado Governor’s Award for creativity and innovation. Ruckman and Barrett were recipients of the IFAI International Design Award in 1997 for design and construction of a 55-foot-high GRS retaining wall.

The Unfinished Story of Geosynthetically Confined Soil

This detailed publication explores the history, mechanics, and technical foundations of GCS® technology. It explains how soil confinement influences structural behavior and why this method has such high performance.

Also includes appendix and research supporting practical design, testing, and construction considerations.
